For Safer Online Shopping Use Virtual Credit Cards

If you are looking for safer online shopping you may want to consider a virtual credit card. It takes away a lot of the risk of personal information and credit card numbers falling into the hands of thieves.

A virtual credit card offers you the option of shopping online with a disposable credit card number that are single-use credit card numbers, which expire within one or two months.

The security benefit of using a virtual credit card for online shopping is your normal bank account is not affected if an online scam artist happens to get your account number.

There's no value to hackers because you use a different, random card number every time you shop online. A virtual credit card number is only good on the Web site where you made your purchase.

With identity theft and email phising scams rising at an alarming level it's a good way to keep your sensitive information private. Even if a scammer does somehow acquire your virtual credit card number, the disposable credit card number expires quickly so it's not an ideal target for them.

The major credit card companies all offer prepaid virtual credit cards and the amount is limited to how much you apply to the card. You are protected just like a regular credit card if they are lost or stolen.

MasterCard calls them MasterCard gift cards and Visa calls them virtual Visa gift cards. You can use them anywhere MasterCard and Visa are accepted.

There are some instances when paying with a virtual credit card won't work. You can't pick up theater tickets; confirm airline, hotel or rental car reservations with a virtual credit card. These credit card numbers don't exist off the Web so they don't work for these things.

But if you are using the disposable credit card numbers for buying products online the security benefits are well worth it. If you are looking for safer online shopping consider a virtual credit card.

How To Stay Safe While Shopping Online?

There's no question that shopping online is convenient. Online buying is not only a timesaver, but it allows you to get great deals when you compare prices of the same item from different online shops. The Internet is like a central shopping mall, where you can find just about everything you might need - from groceries and clothing to collectibles and hard-to-find replacement parts.

Unfortunately, online buying also has its share of pitfalls. According to the U.S. Federal Trade Commission, there were over 205,000 complaints of Internet commerce-related fraud reported in 2004. The more than 184,000 consumers who paid money to the companies about which they were complaining paid a median amount of $214. Forty-eight percent of those complaints were regarding Internet auctions, while 17 percent were related to sales of merchandise.

Savvy consumers take appropriate precautions when shopping online, so that they do not fall victim to fraud. While saying that online shopping is just as safe as shopping in brick-and-mortar stores, he Federal Trade Commission suggests that consumers follow these guidelines when shopping online:

* Use an Internet browser that implements Secure Sockets Layer (SSL). This helps to ensure that the personal information you send to online shops is encrypted.

* Become familiar with the online shop. If you don't already know their reputation, ask for a catalog or brochure. Be sure to inquire about their return and refund policies.

* When creating a password, use a combination of letters, numbers and symbols. Never share your password with anyone else.

* Use a credit card with online shops. If you must dispute the transaction, using a credit card protects you under the Fair Credit Billing Act.

* Print out a copy of your online receipt and your confirmation number. According to law, an online shop must deliver the merchandise within 30 days or notify you of a delay.

* Find the company's privacy policy. It should be listed on their website. It should tell you how they will use your personal information.

* Opt out of marketing choices. Many online shops will give you a choice about whether or not you wish your personal information to be shared with other companies or to be used for marketing purposes. Prior to checking the box, be sure you will welcome the ways in which the information will be used.

Shopping online is a great way to access goods and services 24 hours a day. An online shopping directory can give you a multitude of choices for online shops. Just be sure you shop safely!

Tips For Shopping For Weight Loss

Everybody is different. What works for your friend might not work for you, or might work better for you. Therefore, these suggestions for shopping for weight loss are presented as helps, and I hope you will find something of use to you. With just a little thought and creativity, you should be able to come up with several more tips yourself.

1. Always use a list when you shop, and stick to it. Almost any other food item you put in the buggy will be something that does NOT fit in to your weight loss plan.

2. Plan ahead. Decide what your meals are going to be, and what ingredients you will need. Include portion sizes in this planning. If you just buy a pack of steaks, you will probably cook all those steaks at once and there is a chance they may be eaten all at once. Planning your meals will help you prepare your shopping list. Plan also for meals such as lunches you carry to work.

3. Take someone with you who you can trust to be on your side. By "on your side", I mean, of course, someone who understands and supports your weight loss goals. While this person should be aware of what you are trying to accomplish, YOU must understand that they ARE trying to help you, and YOU must give them permission to express their honest thoughts about purchases you are making...especially if you are deviating from your list.

4. Have this trusted friend or family member HELP you draw up your shopping list.

5. Always eat before shopping. It is a fact that shopping when hungry increases your tendency to put extra items in your shopping cart.

6. Learn to read the labels. Almost every food you buy has a label outlining nutritional content and levels. Knowledge of nutritional needs is important, but does not need to be daunting. Basic information is easy to obtain.

7. Avoid convenience foods. Most have additional calories, fats, or carbohydrates. Although they may taste great, this is often a direct result of those very attributes.

8. Plan PREPARED meals. Cook from scratch. Not only will you probably enjoy the meals more, but having to prepare a meal helps prevent you from indulging yourself with a quick and easy snack or meal.

9. Avoid buying "empty" foods. These are foods such as chips, cookies, or candy. An apple may have as many calories as a piece of candy, but it contains a much higher level of nutrition, and provides factors such as fiber, for example.

10. Buy foods you really like. Eating in a healthy manner does NOT have to be a boring or unrewarding experience. Types of meals enjoyed in Japan, for example, can be tasty and a different and inviting experience, but they can also be very good for you. Again, be aware of portion sizes. Just because it is "good for you" doesn't mean you ought to go back for seconds or thirds.

There you are, 10 hints for shopping for weight loss. Since portion sizes was mentioned twice, let me leave you with this thought. Most Americans eat portions much larger than recommended sizes. A discussion of portion size is more than can be incorporated into this small article. However, people in France tend to eat very rich foods yet do not have the obesity problems found in America. People in Japan who eat a traditional Japanese diet tend not to have an obesity problem such as is found in America. As diverse as these two cultures and their diet are, a common factor is portion size. They typically eat much smaller portions than Americans.
